Sinopsis / Synopsis
In an increasingly fragmented Europe —shaped by social, migratory, and economic tensions— a documentary filmmaker grapples with the vertigo of completing his latest feature. Shot over several years in a working-class neighborhood of a European city, the film portrays the complex coexistence of families from diverse backgrounds. The camera watches, listens, accompanies. But as the editing progresses, the director’s certainties begin to unravel. Is he doing justice to the stories he has captured? Where does the human portrait end and manipulation begin? And what role does the film industry play in all of this?
Director
JL Maldonado (Granada, Spain, 06/29/1978) trained at the TAI School in Madrid, where he specialized in Film Direction and Television Production. From his earliest works (“Occidente”, 2003; “Padre”, 2004; “Jonathan Bender”, 2007), he developed an approach to cinema removed from conventional genres: a cinema of observation and proximity, where documentary and fiction touch without fully resolving into one another. Back in Granada, he founded Occidente Producciones S.L., the platform from which he has built a coherent and demanding body of work. His first feature film, “Manuel Rubio Sánchez” (2010), was recognized with the RTVA Award for Andalusian Audiovisual Creation and nominated for the ASECAN Awards for Best Andalusian Documentary. “Cuero y Tinta” (2015) is a documentary about sports journalism in Spain: its history, its contradictions and its darker corners, constructed through the voices of its own protagonists. In recent years his work has incorporated video art and synthetic voices as expressive tools, exploring the fracture between lived experience and technological mediation. “Relax” (2024), a short film pre-selected for the Goya Awards and selected and awarded in festivals worldwide (Seville European Film Festival, D’A, Lublin, Best Short Documentary at Navarra IFF, Special Jury Mention at Ibiza Cinefest…), draws from the filmmaker’s own anxiety and uses an artificial intelligence voice as an inner narrator. “Paradise”, his third full-length film, is born from that same territory and pushes it to its furthest consequences.
